Overview
Har Ki Dun – One of the Most Beautiful Valleys in the Himalayas
The Har Ki Dun Trek is often hailed as one of the most beautiful valley treks in the entire Himalayan range of India and among the best treks in Uttarakhand. With its balanced mix of adventure and tranquility, it offers trekkers an easy to moderate trek experience, making it ideal for both beginners and nature enthusiasts.
The trail winds through pine forests, alpine meadows, and ancient mountain villages, revealing ever-changing vistas of the Garhwal Himalayas. It’s a journey that blends natural grandeur, mythology, and cultural immersion — a rare combination that defines the essence of Uttarakhand’s trekking experience.
The Enchanting Village of Osla – 2,800 m
A major highlight of the trek is the village of Osla, perched at an altitude of around 2,800 meters. Our Har Ki Dun trek offer takes you to ther enchanting village Osla, which is a picturesque settlement of nearly 400 residents. The village is famous for its multi-storey wooden homes built in traditional Garhwali style.
At the heart of the village stands the Someshwar Mahadev Temple, a beautifully wood-carved temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The craftsmanship of the temple walls reflects the rich artistic heritage of the region.
Trekkers often spend the night here in cozy homestays, enjoying warm hospitality and authentic local cuisine — from hot rotis cooked on traditional stoves to flavorful lentils and organic vegetables grown in mountain soil.
Enroute Facilities & Accommodation
There are several small dhabas and tea stalls along the trek route that serve hot tea, noodles, parathas, and snacks to satisfy trekkers’ hunger during long walking hours.
While camping in nature might sound appealing, self-camping is neither allowed nor safe in the Har Ki Dun Valley due to wildlife presence and eco-regulations. However, trekkers can stay at the GMVN Rest House at the Har Ki Dun summit, though it cannot be booked online and is available only on-site.
For a seamless experience, Places to Visit India offers budget-friendly Har Ki Dun trek packages — covering accommodation, food, and guided support. Simply fill out the contact form below to learn more and start planning your Himalayan adventure.
Peaks & Scenic Highlights
The Har Ki Dun trail rewards trekkers with panoramic views of some of the most majestic Himalayan peaks, including:
Mount Hata Peak (5,820 m)
Jamdhar Glacier (4,300 m)
Har Ki Dun Peak
Swargarohini Range (6,252 m)
Flowing through the valley is the Supin River, originating from the Jamdhar Glacier, adding serenity and music to the landscape.
For those seeking an extra adventure, the trek can be extended to Marinda Tal Lake, located about 3 km beyond Har Ki Dun. However, due to a cloudburst in 2023, the lake has partially collapsed and is now barely visible. Yet, continuing towards the Jamdhar Glacier valley after Har Ki Dun remains one of the trek’s most rewarding extensions — a path less traveled but full of raw Himalayan beauty.
Wildlife Encounters
The Har Ki Dun Valley is home to rich Himalayan biodiversity. Trekkers may spot:
Himalayan Bear
Jackals
Vultures and high-altitude birds soaring across the valley skies
Each encounter adds to the wilderness charm of this trek, making it a complete Himalayan experience.
Har Ki Dun trek best time
The ideal time to visit Har Ki Dun is April to June and September to November, when the weather is clear, trails are vibrant, and views of Swargarohini are spectacular.
Monsoon (July–August) is not recommended due to heavy rains and landslides, while winter (December–March) turns the valley into a snow paradise but requires high-level preparation.
