Beas Kund Trek: A Scenic Himalayan Escape Near Manali
The Beas Kund Trek is one of the most beautiful and beginner-friendly treks near Manali, offering breathtaking mountain views, vast meadows, glaciers, and peaceful Himalayan landscapes. This short trek is perfect for travelers looking for a quick adventure while experiencing the beauty of the Himalayas.
Situated at an altitude of around 3700 meters, Beas Kund is believed to be the origin point of the Beas River. According to local beliefs, Sage Ved Vyas, the author of the Mahabharata, meditated and performed penance here. The glacial water flowing into the kund forms a small stream that later becomes the mighty Beas River.
The Beas Kund Trek can be completed in one or two days, making it one of the best short treks in Himachal Pradesh. Despite being a shorter trek, it offers landscapes and scenic beauty similar to longer Himalayan expeditions. The months of September and October are considered the best time for the trek, as the meadows remain lush green with small snow patches adding to the beauty of the route.
The journey begins from Dhundhi village base camp near the Atal Tunnel. From here, the trail gradually ascends through open valleys, riverside paths, and alpine meadows surrounded by snow-covered mountains.
The majestic Hanuman Tibba (5982 meters) dominates the landscape throughout the trek, along with several other peaks of the Pir Panjal range. The views of these towering mountains create a spectacular backdrop during the entire journey.
As trekkers move further along the trail, they pass through green grasslands filled with colorful wildflowers and dense patches of Himalayan trees like oak, cedar, and rhododendron. Crossing Palchani Nala and the small wooden bridge near the Bridge of Texis adds excitement and charm to the trek.
Around Bakarthach, the terrain becomes more rugged, with snow-covered rocks and moraine sections making the route slightly adventurous. The changing landscapes throughout the trek keep the experience exciting and visually stunning.
Starting from Dhundhi at around 2900 meters, trekkers gradually gain altitude up to Beas Kund at 3700 meters. The route offers mesmerizing views of massive meadows, glaciers, and colorful mountains painted in shades of white, brown, grey, and green.
Trekkers also have the option to continue further towards Lady Leg, located around 30–40 minutes beyond Beas Kund. This beautiful valley lies at an altitude of around 3800 meters and is considered the base camp for the Friendship Peak Trek. The valley often remains covered with snow, creating a magical Himalayan landscape.
The Beas Kund Trek is considered easy and safe, making it suitable for beginners, families, and nature lovers. The complete trek distance is approximately 13–14 km and can comfortably be completed without technical climbing or prior trekking experience.
